Case Study: Exploring Suriname

Date May 14, 2007

In the blogosphere there are a lot of niches covered. The most covered niches, making money online and blogging, are successful, because more people are getting interested in making money with blogging. I want to try out a different niche: tourism.

Tourism at the moment

Suriname is a tropical country on the north coast of South America. It’s a beautiful place with a lot of jungle and nice spots for eco-tourism. But most websites that talk about Suriname with tourism in mind are in Dutch. The tour operators get most of their customers from the Netherlands. Why?

The most important reason seems to be the fact that we were a Dutch colony and we speak Dutch as our primary language. In light of the past ties, you have a better chance to get customers from Holland. But the problem with this is, that the Dutch community around the world is rather small. Focusing on the Dutch alienates non-Dutch speakers.

In my opinion there are not many non-Dutch tourists visiting Suriname, because there is a little to read about Suriname on the Internet. If you do find information, it’s summarized, and scattered all over.

Getting the word out

To get more tourists to Suriname, there is the need for one place where they can find as much information as possible about this destination. Since most people understand some English, it is the best language to present information in.

Exploring Suriname

I decided to start a new blog called Exploring Suriname. I will visit different places in our beautiful country and write about the beauty of it. I have already got Genevieve interested enough to join me (more about Genevieve in the future on Exploring Suriname).

Exploring Suriname will give you reasons why you will want to visit Suriname, because it’s written with human feeling and emotion. Most of the time you find this kind of information in a corporate style, just purely to provide the information. But in this case you will be able to read how the writer experiences the beauty of this country.

Case study?

I will use Exploring Suriname to study different promotion ideas. I will try to apply everything I learned about blogging, networking, monetizing and marketing to this blog, without participating in link exchanges, and other ways to get spikes of traffic. I want to see how much of a linkbait this blog can be.

So now and then I’ll write here about the ups and downs of this project, just to share the possibilities for growing with my readers.

Keep a close eye on Exploring Suriname. At the moment I’ve moved some old posts I had on A few good notes, before I turned that into a poetry blog, to Exploring Suriname. Later this week Genevieve will start writing and the blog will come to life.

Nice project. However, I’ll point out a few reasons why nobody wants to visit Suriname. It’s extremely difficult to get a visa for suriname. It takes up to 3 weeks and who in their right mind would be willing to relinquish their passport to a foreign country for that long if one can visit Costa Rica, Belize, Panama (rainforest and beaches) without the extra hassle of securing a visa.
On top of that flights to above mentioned countries are cheaper with better connections and a better infrastructure.

    Good luck!!

  2. Cool, thanks for the input, Ken.

I will try to expand on this in the blog too. Maybe there’s something that Exploring Suriname can do to change all this.
