Internet problems in Suriname
May 12, 2007
Last Sunday a problem with a repeater on the bottom of the ocean left Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana with very limited Internet connection.
The largest, state owned telecommunications company, Telesur, uses this Americas 2 fiber optics line to provide Internet and international telephone and messaging services to the majority of Internet users in Suriname. They activated their backup satellite connection, but the downside of that is that a lot of services were blocked or limited.
This is the reason why I could not update my blogs this week. I did write some articles for this blog, which I posted yesterday, using the timestamp of the day I wrote them.
At the moment, browsing the web is done best at night, when most others are asleep, so there is more bandwidth available. During the day, it takes minutes to load a site. That is, IF it gets to load!
These problems are said to be solved in approximately 2 weeks. More on this in these articles.
